Do you feel that your inability to lose weight may be related to your mental health?

According to WebMD, a British 19-year study revealed that people who suffered from “chronic or repeat episodes of depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders” were twice as likely to become obese compared to those who did not report any chronic mental disorders. However, it’s not clear if people become overweight because they’re depressed or people become depressed because they’re overweight.

If you feel your extra weight is from anxiety or depression–whether or not the weight or the anxiety came first–there are a few things you can do to help to improve your emotions and lose weight.

Check with Your Doctor

See your doctor as soon as possible. Discuss your symptoms and all the medications you are taking. Be sure to get your thyroid checked too. Hypothyroidism can cause depression and weight gain.¬†You may also have other medical conditions that can cause anxiety and weight gain, so it’s always best to check with a doctor, especially if you are feeling depressed and experience a lot of anxiety.

Do Some Research

One of the best books for anxiety and phobias is The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne PhD. The book has several four and five star ratings at Amazon.
