Do you feel that your inability to lose weight may be related to your mental health?
According to WebMD, a British 19-year study revealed that people who suffered from “chronic or repeat episodes of depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders” were twice as likely to become obese compared to those who did not report any chronic mental disorders. However, it’s not clear if people become overweight because they’re depressed or people become depressed because they’re overweight.
If you feel your extra weight is from anxiety or depression–whether or not the weight or the anxiety came first–there are a few things you can do to help to improve your emotions and lose weight.
Check with Your Doctor
See your doctor as soon as possible. Discuss your symptoms and all the medications you are taking. Be sure to get your thyroid checked too. Hypothyroidism can cause depression and weight gain. You may also have other medical conditions that can cause anxiety and weight gain, so it’s always best to check with a doctor, especially if you are feeling depressed and experience a lot of anxiety.
Do Some Research
One of the best books for anxiety and phobias is The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne PhD. The book has several four and five star ratings at Amazon. It has comprehensive information about anxiety and has assessment questions to help you understand what kind of anxiety you’re suffering from as well as suggestions to help you improve your condition. The book has been in publication for several years and has been reprinted several times to include up-to-date research.
Many therapists suggest patients read Bourne’s book along with therapy. You can find his book at most book stores, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.

Change Your Diet and Exercise Regularly
Many health experts believe that eating a whole foods, organic diet that consists of mostly plant-based foods and exercising regularly are the best ways to lose weight and improve your mental health. Here are a few popular articles about eating a whole foods diet.
The best thing about following a diet that consists of mostly plant-based foods is you’ll likely lose weight quickly and start to feel better emotionally. If you’re eating a diet that consists of mostly processed and fast-foods, you’re probably not getting all the nutrients you need to feel well emotionally. There has also been research connecting junk foods to depression.
What do you think about anxiety and weight gain? Do you believe there is a connection? Do you think a diet from mostly plant foods can help improve anxiety?
